What is Halloween?
Halloween is a festival celebrated every year on October 31st and is very popular especially in the USA, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. However, its origins go far back into the past and are deeply rooted in Celtic culture.
History of Halloween
The origin of Halloween lies in the ancient Celtic festivalSamhain1. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, often referred to as the “dark season.” The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead was particularly permeable. Ghosts and other supernatural beings could cross into our world. To protect themselves from these spirits, people disguised themselves and wore masks to masquerade as ghosts, so they would not be recognized or bothered by the real spirits.
With the Christianization of Europe, Samhain was integrated into the Christian holidayAll Saints’ Day(in English: All Hallows’ Day), which is celebrated on November 1. The night before, the eve of All Saints’ Day, became known asAll Hallows’ Eve, which later evolved into the word Halloween.
Over the centuries, Halloween has changed significantly and has developed into a major folk festival, particularly in the USA. Today, Halloween is mainly associated with fun and creativity. Children dress up in costumes that can often be scary, but also humorous or cute, and go from house to house to play “Trick or Treat.” Adults also enjoy celebrating Halloween by hosting parties, wearing costumes, and decorating their homes with spooky decorations.
Pumpkin and Halloween
Another typical element of Halloween is the carving of pumpkins, also known asJack-o’-Lanterns.. The custom also originates from Celtic tradition, where originally turnips were hollowed out and lit with candles to ward off spirits. In North America, this tradition was transferred to pumpkins, which are ideal for carving due to their availability and size.
Halloween today is a festival that combines creativity, fun, and a touch of spooky excitement. It’s a time when people of all ages can unleash their imaginations, whether through costumes, decorations, or creative projects like coloring Halloween pictures.
